THE BEACH:

YOUR DAY AT THE BEACH - A FEW THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW!

The beaches in the Daytona Beach area offer breathtaking beauty and water related fun. Whether your idea of the perfect day at the beach is to relax with a good book, build sandcastles, play in the waves, or just take a long walk, here are a few things the Volusia County Beach Patrol wants you to know.

- The beach is open to pedestrians at all times.

- On the area's 36 miles of beaches, automobile access is normally permitted on 16 miles in desegnated sections during daytime hours. Vehicle access tolls may apply. Other areas have been designated natural conservation zones or family recreation areas and beach driving is not permitted.

- Parking on the beach is allowed in vehicle access areas east of the conservation markers. Park either facing the dunes or the ocean.

- Vehicles with a hadicapped ID receive free beach access.- Surf Chair, an all terrain wheelchair, is designed for safe, comfortable travel in surf and soft sand. Free Surf Chairs are available at these Volusia County Lifeguard stations: Main Street in Daytona Beach, Browning Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores, Dunlawton Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores, Cardinal Drive in Wilbur-by-the-Sea, Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet and Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach.

- Alcohol and glass containers are not allowed on the beach.

- Music or noise that can be heard from more than 50 feet of the source is illegal.

- It is illegal to disturb dune vegetation.

- During peak summer months, specific areas are designated "swimming only" zones.

- Lights out for sea turtles - During the sea turtle nesting season, May 1st thru October 31st, female turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the dry sand above the tide line. About two months later the baby turtles (hatchlings) emerge from their nest and instinctively race to the ocean. Lights adjacent to the beach disorient hatchlings, often leading them away from the ocean and toward a certain death. Volusia County enforces strict lighting regulations. They ask guests to comply with the local lighting regulations and keep balcony or porch lights turned off during the nesting season. Draw drapes or blinds at night if the room is lighted.

-Don't litter. Cigarette butts, fishing line and other trash can harm anumals and birds along the beach,

-Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet and Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach offer the only sections of Volusia County Beaches where pets are permitted.
